Cytoplasmic incompatibility in social insects

چکیده

In this essay, I briefly summarise reproductive phenotypes associated withWolbachia in insects, present a model of the dynamics of infection frequency for maternally-inherited microorganisms and determine the effect of changing costs associated with incompatibility, infection-related fecundity loss and number of mates in ideal populations of social insects. The model predicts that infections of this type spread to fixation most easily in populations with a high cost due to incompatibility, little fecundity loss and where females have a large number of mates.

Does pupal communication influence Wolbachia-mediated cytoplasmic incompatibility?

Wolbachia are widespread endosymbiotic bacteria found in terrestrial arthropods and filarial nematodes [1]. In insects, Wolbachia generally rely on diverse strategies to manipulate their host's reproduction and favor their own vertical transmission through infected eggs [2]. One such mechanism is a sterility syndrome called 'cytoplasmic incompatibility'. Cytoplasmic incompatibility occurs at fe...

Cytoplasmic incompatibility and bacterial density in Nasonia vitripennis.

Cytoplasmically (maternally) inherited bacteria that cause reproductive incompatibility between strains are widespread among insects. In the parasitoid wasp Nasonia, incompatibility results in improper condensation and fragmentation of the paternal chromosomes in fertilized eggs. Some form of genome imprinting may be involved. Because of haplodiploidy, incompatibility results in conversion of (...

Role of delayed nuclear envelope breakdown and mitosis in Wolbachia-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility.

The bacterium Wolbachia manipulates reproduction in millions of insects worldwide; the most common effect is cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI). We found that CI resulted from delayed nuclear envelope breakdown of the male pronucleus in Nasonia vitripennis. This caused asynchrony between the male and female pronuclei and, ultimately, loss of paternal chromosomes at the first mitosis. When Wolbach...

Should Symbionts Be Nice or Selfish? Antiviral Effects of Wolbachia Are Costly but Reproductive Parasitism Is Not

Symbionts can have mutualistic effects that increase their host's fitness and/or parasitic effects that reduce it. Which of these strategies evolves depends in part on the balance of their costs and benefits to the symbiont. We have examined these questions in Wolbachia, a vertically transmitted endosymbiont of insects that can provide protection against viral infection and/or parasitically man...

Molecular evidence and phylogenetic affiliations of Wolbachia in cockroaches.

Wolbachia is a genus of obligate intracellular bacteria in the Anaplasmataceae family of the -Proteobacteria that are transmitted through the egg cytoplasm and manipulate reproduction in their hosts in various ways (Werren, 1997). Wolbachia are associated with cytoplasmic incompatibility, parthenogenesis, feminization and male killing in arthropods and these aspects have been adequately reviewe...
